Wunderlich

Frieda Wunderlich (1884-1965) was the only woman in the first group of eminent scholars who were forced to flee Nazi persecution and established the University In Exile in at The New School. A German sociologist, economist and politician, she was actively involved in the women's movement and became the first woman to serve as the dean of a graduate faculty in the United States.

The short video, with music by Stefania de Kenessey, pays tribute to Wunderlich’s amazing but insufficiently acknowledged legacy. It premiered on Oct.5, 2019 at the Women's Legacy Celebration at The New School, marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the university.

The film uses archival footage accessed at the United States Holocaust Museum, edited by Savanna Washington, with sound editing by Will Lucas.

The Women’s Legacy Project

The Women’s Legacy Project was to celebrate The New School’s 100th centennial. It is a 90-minute performance commemorates the legacy of women who have been forgotten and/or erased from our collective memory – including ten “Founding Mothers” who helped to establish The New School. I was commissioned to compose a piece for this special performance.
